Kichang Choi
최기창(1973년생)은 확연히 드러나 보이지는 않지만 삶을 이끌어 가는 어떤 동력이나 속성을 감지하려 한다. 연속되는 삶에서 그가 걸러낸 것은 행복이나 사랑 등의 이름으로 불리는 것들이며, 이를 소재로 매체적 실험을 통해 반복적이고, 무작위적인 방식으로 재구성하여 보여준다. 최근에는 ‘바가텔’이라는 음악용어를 차용하여 가볍고 작은 것의 아름다움을 찾아내는 무해한 해찰을 진행하고 있다. 그는 지속적으로 사유의 사각지대를 조망하며 자발적 재인식에 대한 질문을 끊임없이 이어간다.
홍익대학교에서 판화 전공으로 학사와 석사학위를 받았고, 영국 런던 첼시 예술대학교에서 순수예술로 PG dip.를 졸업했다. 1998년 중앙미술대전 우수상을 받으며 미술계에 데뷔하여 2022년 <바가텔을 위하여>(프로젝트 스페이스 미음), 2021년 <흠결 없는 마음>(원앤제이 갤러리), 2020년 <한 번의 키스>(원앤제이 갤러리), 2015년 <행복으로 가는 길>(서울시 용산구 서계동 236-22), 2011년 <SERENDIPITIES>(프로젝트 스페이스 사루비아 다방) 등 10회의 개인전을 개최하였다.
2021년 <5·18 40주년 특별전: '볼 수 있는 것과 말할 수 있는 것 사이'>((구) 국군광주병원), 2018년 <광주비엔날레>(광주아시아문화전당), 2016년 <부산비엔날레>(F1963), 2012년 <아트스펙트럼>(삼성미술관 리움) 등 국내외 다수의 단체전과 비엔날레에 참여하였으며 국립현대미술관 창동 미술창작스튜디오, 경기창작센터 레지던시 스튜디오, 몽인아트스페이스 입주작가로 참여하였다.
Kichang Choi(b.1973) tries to sense some driving force or attribute that guides life even when it is not clearly visible. The things he has discovered in his continuous life are those called ‘happiness’ or ‘love’, and they are reconstructed and presented in a repetitive and random way through media experiments with the material. Recently, he has borrowed the musical term 'Bagatelle' to do harmless patrols to find the beauty of light and compact things. He continuously looks at the blind spots of reason and continues to ask questions about voluntary rediscovery.
He graduated Bachelor and Master degrees in Printmaking at Hongik University and a Postgraduate Diploma in Fine Arts from the Chelsea College of Art and Design, London, UK. Debuting in the art world through the Joongang Fine arts Prize ‘Prize of Excellence’ in 1998, he went on to hold ten solo exhibitions, including ‘Für Bagatelle’, Project space MIUM (Seoul, 2022), ‘The Spotless Mind’, One and J. Gallery (Seoul, 2021), ‘One Kiss’, One and J. Gallery (Seoul, 2020), ‘The way with Happiness’, 236-22, Seogye-dong (Seoul, 2015), and ‘SERENDIPITIES’, Project Space SARUBIA, (Seoul 2011).
He has participated in numerous domestic and international group exhibitions and biennales, including ‘Between the seen and the spoken, MaytoDay: a project to commemorate the 40th anniversary of the May 18 Gwangju democratization movement’ at the Former Armed Forces Gwangju Hospital in 2021, GWANGJU biennale 2018, Asia Culture Center, BUSAN biennale 2016 (F1963), and ARTSPECTRUM 2012, Leeum Samsung Museum of Art, Seoul, and has worked as a resident artist for the IASK-Changdong Residential Art Studio, of the National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art (Seoul), the Gyeonggi Creation Center Residence program, Gyeonggi Museum of Modern Art, and the Mongin Art Space Residence program (Seoul).
