오늘날 사회참여예술(Socially Engaged Art)이라고 부르는 예술 형태의 선구자 중 한 명이 한국에서 전시를 연다. 유럽에서 활동하고 있는 예술가이자 건축가인 아폴로니아 슈시테르쉬치(Apolonija Šušteršič)다. 그는 개인과 공동체 사이 새로운 관계 형성과 구축을 위한 다양한 예술 작업을 기획/조직하고 창조해왔다. 그의 작업은 다양한 상황 속에 과정을 중심으로 진행된다. 여기에 필요한 것은 협력, 다양한 오브제, 이벤트, 예술 행동 등이다. 슈시테르쉬치는 예술적 방식으로 사람들과 협력하며 공동 이익을 위한 공동 행동을 유발하고 이끄는 전략을 제안한다. 작든 크든 세상을 변화시키기 위한 제안을 만드는 것을 목표로 늘 ‘지금 이 순간’에 그러한 전략이 필요하다고 작가는 말한다. 이는 과정을 통해 관계를 생성하는 일이다. 이러한 예술철학으로 지난 몇 십년 동안 아폴로니아 슈시테르쉬치는 숱한 참여 프로젝트를 유럽, 중동, 아시아 등지에서 만들어 왔다.

오래도록 실제 커뮤니티 중심으로 작업해온 작가 슈시테르쉬치가 다시 ‘화이트 큐브’로 돌아와 프로젝트 스페이스 미음에서 전시를 연다. 의자와 테이블, 의자를 해체한 벽면 패널작품을 활용한 설치작품을 통해 상호작용을 이끌어내고자 한다. 여기서 의자와 테이블은 시민들에게 권력을 나누는 아이디어로 작용한다. 관객이 직접 손으로 조립하는 DIY 방식의 특성과 움직이는 벽면 패널작품으로 많은 레이아웃을 제공한다.
관객이 설치된 작품 위치를 변경하고 갤러리 관계자에게 다른 방식으로 변화를 요구하는 행위가 가능하다. 단지 하나의 예술품을 생산하는 걸 목표로 하는 게 아니라 참여를 통해 관계를 형성시켜내는 과정을 목적으로 하는 것이다. 작가는 관객의 참여 행위가 화이트 큐브에서 토론, 구성, 관계를 생성해내고 어떤 인터렉션(상호작용)이 일어나는지 관찰하고자 한다. 이러한 예술 체험이 한국 관객에게는 낯선 시도인 게 틀림없다. 그만큼 새롭고 신선한 질문이 될 수 있을 것이다.
관객과 예술 애호가들는 갤러리에서 다양한 가구와 패널 작품 구매가 가능한데 이 또한 하나의 예술참여행위로 연결된다. 콜렉터는 구매 행위를 통해 오슬로(노르웨이)의 ‘NJOKOBOK 프로젝트’ 후원자이자 ‘NJOKOBOK Friends’ 구성원이 되고, NJOKOBOK 네트워크 내 자기 공간에 설치한 사진을 공유하며 의견을 나눌 수 있다. ‘Njokobok’은 세네갈어로 ‘어서오세요 함께해요!’라는 뜻이다.
NJOKOBOK은 아폴로니아 슈시테르시치(Apolonija’s Šušteršič)와 유수 디옵(Youssou Diop)이 2016년 슬로베니아, 세네갈, 노르웨이에서 시작한 장기 참여 예술 프로젝트다. 작가는 현재 오슬로에서 Njokobok_공간을 운영하고 있는데 지역 커뮤니티 공간 역할을 하고 있다. Njokobok_커뮤니티는 공동의 이익에 관심이 있는 사람들이 모이는 비영리 단체다.
전시는 11월 18일(금)부터 12월 15일(목)까지 평창동 프로젝트스페이스 미음에서 무료로 관람/참여할 수 있다.

"I'm interested in examining and exercising the alternatives for possible futures in various situations within our present society".
Apolonija's Šušteršič long-standing art/architecture practice is built upon issues and considerations that are, in our post-pandemic times, very relevant and much discussed.
How to live together? - is the main question of her practice since the 90s; how to stimulate an individual awareness through intersubjective relations that would provide a necessary change in our society today without prejudice, without unnecessary borders or limitations.
Through her practice, she creates various forms of situated platforms for establishing new relations between individuals and communities. The work evolves from a specific context or situation; it is process based and not focused on the final product. However, as an art project, it is usually constructed from various physical objects, events, and actions in cooperation with others.
During the years, she worked on numerous scenarios for participatory projects that have been durational or temporary. She is one of the pioneers of what we call today socially engaged art.
Through her projects, in cooperation with people, she proposes strategies that lead to common action for common benefits. She believes such strategies are necessary when working with a situation "in this moment" that aims to create a suggestion for changing our society. She proposes a type of change shaped through a process developed from the context of the situation. Therefore every proposal is unique. And every process is an experience that produces awareness and creates relations between the people involved.
She is building up an argument on participation, originating from examining the context, intersubjectivity and production of awareness. She is suggesting that knowledge is produced from the situation and working together with people around her to create a common space, a democratic space, the space to share.
Within Project Space MIUM exhibition, she decided to come back to the white cube to re-examine the social and economic potential of the gallery context today when the world seems to be more than ever divided on the privileged and non - privileged, included and excluded, people with power and those without. In her mind, the various worlds can connect and support each other to create a better future for everyone.
At Project Space MIUM, she will present an installation with stools, tables and wall panels that offer a possibility for interaction.
In the Korean historical context, only the emperor used the stools and high tables to manifest his power. However, in this case, the stools and tables at the exhibition represent the democratisation of society and the distribution of power to everyone - to all citizens.
The furniture and wooden panels are designed as DIY elements that people can assemble or disassemble them without any special skill, by themselves at home.
The visitors of Project Space MIUM have the possibility to take an active role while visiting the exhibition. The artist is encouraging them to interact with the furniture elements and painted panels and, together with the Gallerist or her Assistant, change the exhibition daily, change the space of the gallery and enable a situation of a dialogical encounter: discussing, composing, comparing, analysing, creating meaning and background stories.
Project Space MIUM became a playground for dialogical exercise.
Besides, MIUM visitors and art lovers are invited to purchase various furniture elements and painted panels and create their home installations and in various social settings.
By purchasing, the gallery visitors will become supporters of the NJOKOBOK project and members of the NJOKOBOK Friends. They will be asked to share the picture of their home installation within a given NJOKOBOK network.
"Njokobok" is a word in the Wolof language (Senegalese) which means: you are welcome; we share it!
NJOKOBOK is a the title of a long-term project that Apolonija Šušteršič, artist and Youssou Diop, cook started in 2015 in Slovenia, Senegal, and later in Norway. Over the years, many people joined the project, which is today mostly organised around Njokobok_Resturant in Oslo, Norway. The space of the restaurant serves as a neighbourhood community space every Monday and Tuesday when the restaurant is closed. Neighbours and friends who joined the Njokobok_Community are helping organise free dinners and other cultural activities weekly under Neighbourhood Mondays.
The furniture elements at the exhibition were originally designed and built by the artist for the NJOKOBOK restaurant.
Njokobok_Community is a non-profit organisation to mobilise people (neighbours & friends) who are interested in working together for the common good, with actions and activities all related to the neighbourhood and its environment to produce awareness about the community that is composed of a variety of different individuals and groups to create situations of sharing and learning from each other.The community shares concerns and interests about making food, growing food, sharing food, and going beyond food into the questions of contemporary culture, public participation, and taking care of our living environment.
